Sustainable development

Genneper Parken, nature and the environment

The concept of sustainability is inextricably linked with nature and the environment. At Genneper Parken, sustainability is a matter of course. Preserving nature and acting responsibly towards society and our fellow humans is an integral part of our culture. This topic is also explicitly discussed during the sounding board meetings, which are attended by all the stakeholders in Genneper Parken.

Natural sustainability

Treating the environment with care and attention is one of the main objectives of the Milieu Educatie Centrum or MEC ( Environmental Education Centre). Sustainability in natural areas is also part of the Long-term Plan of Genneper Parken. The preservation and development initiatives for the area are based on the long-term plan. At present, MEC is collaborating with a number of partners to create a sustainability route, which will explain the concept of environmental sustainability to school children in an easily understandable way.

Technological sustainability

Technological developments and intelligent solutions have increased the sustainability at Genneper Parken and the various venues. In the case of Nationaal Zwemcentrum de Tongelreep, all kinds of measures have been introduced in order to economise on water along with the biomass power generating plant, which went into service in 2008. In addition to providing energy for the complete swimming pool complex, this local power plant also satisfies 80% of the total energy requirement of all the municipal buildings in Eindhoven.

Innovative sustainability

At Genneper Parken, we and our partners continually search for innovative solutions to current issues. For example: the development of GPS-guided walks in the area, energy-efficient LED street lighting (lighting that guides cyclists and pedestrians through the area and extinguishes when the bicycle or walker has passed) and dynamic road signs that recommend routes in order to optimise traffic intensity. Other developments include medically supervised exercise programmes and advanced systems for improving the sporting performance of top athletes and recreational athletes.
